What to Know Before Going to a Golf Course for the First Time

Finally, you want to begin playing golf.

While there are many important parts to consider after deciding to become a golfer. Remember, they can only be done one step at a time, if you make the decision to commit, practice, and play.

Since you are considering a visit to a golf course, I’ll assume that you have gained knowledge of hitting the golf ball, understanding the basic rules and etiquette of the golf game.

If not, I recommend that you read Golf for Sure, Blog #2!

Once you learn the basic of these three areas of golf, I recommend that you find a friend or someone to play golf with. It will lead to a lot of enjoyment and much fun.

Golf is the kind of sport that anyone can play together no matter what their level of skills are.

Essentially you are playing against the golf course, and as a beginner your objective is to learn the game, and to become proficient at hitting the golf ball.

When you start your playing, there are many things to remember, one important thing to remember is that “everyone was a beginner at one time or another”.

So, learn the rules and etiquette as much as possible, and don’t stress about it too much.

Acquiring Equipment and Accessories

While golf is a great sport that is loved by many peoples, it isn’t for everybody. So, give yourself a period, to determine if you enjoy the game.

Once the trial period has passed and you are sure that you will enjoy the game, it will be time to acquire a set of clubs plus other accessories necessary to play the game.

The following list includes the basic items you will need when you make your first trip to the golf course:

  • A set of clubs, wedges, and a putter
  • Golf bag
  • Golf shoes
  • Golf balls
  • Golf apparel
  • Minor accessories to include tees, ball markers, and devout tool.

However, at this stage of your learning, buying your equipment and accessories, controlling cost should be your main focus.

Remember, those fancy name brand equipment and accessories aren’t going anywhere, and you can buy more expensive items later after you improve your skills.

Also, don’t get caught in the trap of buying a bunch of accessories that you don’t need as a beginner.

Rules of Golf

There are a lot of rules in golf, the rule book is larger than you might expect and sometimes confusing.

However, as a beginner you should not get yourself involved with specific rules, but this is not to say that rules are not important.

You as a beginner, learning to golf, your interest currently is to learn to swing the golf club properly and to make consistent club to ball contact. And over a period, you will get comfortable with the basic rules of golf.

While there are plenty of other rules involved with playing golf, here are seven rules listed below that will get you started.

  • Never make noise while another player is hitting a shot.
  • When on the putting green, don’t walk between the hole and another player ball.
  • Always rake sand traps when you are done.
  • Replace your devout wherever possible.
  • Fix indentation your ball makes on the green.
  • Help other golfers look for their ball.
  • Play at a reasonable pace or let the players behind you “play through”.
